Meet Tony Bickel
When did you start volunteering with NPO?
2019
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am married and have a 14 year old daughter at home, and two daughters in their early 30's (one son in law and one grandchild as well). I enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, snowmobiles and old cars.
What inspired you to get involved with NPO?
NPO has a history of being a national group, that helps individual states be successful at shared parenting initiatives. Contact with the great people has helped not only invigorate me, as well as become more effective.
What is your position in your NPO chapter and what are some of your duties?
I am Chair of the Wisconsin Chapter, as well as the president of a local Wisconsin group, Wisconsin Fathers for Children and Families. This allows me to work with great people here in Wisconsin to gather ideas and action plans to help our state continue to improve the lives of children with separated parents.
What are some lessons you've learned from your volunteer work?
Everyone has value to add, and listening is the best way to uncover that value. People at times need help to get back on their feet, and frequently show appreciation. The more I learn, the more I find out what I did not know and that helps greatly with understanding how family issues effect so many people.
What advice would you give to volunteers working toward family law reform?
Shared parenting is becoming a reality for more and more kids. We all benefit from that happening, and we need to work toward having it happen as often as possible.
